Beware of most recent IRS Scam

It’s all over the news lately that people are receiving phone calls from the IRS demanding payment.  The calls appear to be using a legitimate 1-800 phone number and the voice on the other end also sounds official.  When the poor unsuspecting victim answers the phone, they are told that they owe money to the IRS.  Fear overcomes their common sense and some have paid out money to the scammers.  Some have even purchased thousand dollar debit cards to department stores, and mailed them to a scammer’s address.

What you need to know to make sure you don’t become a victim is that the IRS’s first attempt to contact you is never via phone\email.  The IRS is still faithful to snail mail (thankfully), and that is how they will initially contact you.  You will get an official IRS notice in the mail, describing the tax issue, and how you should best contact them.  A phone call or email will never ever precede a letter in the mail from the IRS.
